alternator? battery?

2002 ford escape - started it and lights were dim - put it in drive and it went about 100 feet and died. tried to turn it over - click, click, click sound. jumped it and it started right up. let it sit running for about 20 minutes - all fine. put

Sounds like the Alternator to me. i don't know what the dashboard of the car is like but it should have either a volt gauge or a alternator warning light, if your volt gauge is reading low, well below 13 or 14 volts or the alternator light is on then
