Does the K & N Filter really increase hp and fuel economy or causes more engine wear?

Has anyone used the K & N air filter on a Scion tC? Anyone has had good experience with it in term of horse power, fuel economy. I have read reviews and some said great and some said terrible like causing more engine wear, transmission problem, etc.

I use a K&N Filter and I love them. I put an old type filter in during a recharge of the KN filter and there was a noticible horse power change. As for fuel economy I never checked before and after so that is up to you to decide. I like them though
